Queens' Ways IV

Queens' Ways IV, October 2008 to April 2009

Seven Projects from Arts and Sciences

Frankfurt's maecenia foundation is delighted to present the fourth season of its Queens' Ways series.

We call this series of events 'Queens' Ways' because the careers of most female artists and scientists differ from those of their male counterparts, who take the proverbial German 'Kings Way', in that they are rarely as straight or direct.

maecenia aims at promoting the work of women artists and scientists and supporting their projects and concepts in the long-term.

Queens' Ways IV presents a mix of talks, lectures, readings, exhibitions and performances, in the course of which the authors introduce their specific scientific and/or artistic projects in Frankfurt.

Women and Anti-colonial Resistance in Southern Africa
FRAUEN UND BEFREIUNGSKRIEGE IM SÜDLICHEN AFRIKA

Many young women were actively involved in the anti-colonial resistance in southern Africa. They combined their military fight with demands for education and land rights. But even though the liberation movements propagated social reforms, women's liberation and the abolition of colonial rule, female combatants were discriminated against by male guerrilla bosses and frequently threatened with sexualised violence. As the gap between claim and reality widened even further after political independence, female ex-combatants began to set up independent women's organisations that fight gender-specific violence and HIV/AIDS in southern Africa today. Of their former leaders and fellow combatants who now represent their governments they demand legal reform and gender equality.

The 'Contemporary Arts Library' in Prishtina, Exhibition Opening
THE CONTEMPORARY ARTS LIBRARY

The 'Contemporary Arts Library' came into existence in 2006 as a result of the commitment of three artists. It comprises a book collection donated by international artists and institutions and a project room in Prishtina, Kosovo. Judith Raum presents her personal version of the project's history in the 'Ten Reasons to be a Member' room. Work for the project constantly raises questions of religious, political and economic dependence and independence, of the capacities and limits of co-operation and of feasibility. In her installation, Judith Raum shows how she takes on these challenges as an artist rather than as a development aid worker, and she talks about the importance of the project to her work .

Wednesday, 14 th January 2009, 7 pm, Café im Frankfurter Kunstverein

ZWISCHEN-ZEIT-RÄUME.

Young composer Saskia Bladt and costume designer Berit Mohr decided to present their work in the course of a concert accompanied by scenic images, exploring the relationships of sound and image throughout different historic epochs. How do these contrast with the approaches of sound artists and visual artists today?

home spaces – home dreams
Film Premiere
„HEIMATRÄUME“

By Enida Delalic and Simon Stadler, Frankfurt

The film is a journey through Frankfurt where the filmmakers enter the world of immigrants whose living spaces are characterized by different cultural backgrounds and by the views and concepts of different generations. The film focuses on their search for new home spaces. 'The protagonists take us on a journey through their city. They let us discover their spaces, dreams and visions. And like a pen drawing lines from one point to another, they allow us to see an delicate network all across the city that would otherwise remain invisible.'

This premiere is kindly supported by the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft.
